Japan Relief Efforts

The recent earthquake and resulting Tsunami in Japan have caused massive destruction and havoc. If it weren't for the shocking images broadcast on television and the Internet it would have been difficult to believe the magnitude of the catastrophe.

Almost 9,000 people are confirmed dead and there are still more than 13,000 reported missing. In spite of the wide media coverage, there are still many unknown aspects of the disaster and its consequences on Japan.  Reuters published the following figures:

349,349 people are living in shelters around the country

242,927 households are without electricity

1.04 million households without running water

14,637 buildings have been completely destroyed

The World Bank estimates the cost of  Japan's earthquake and Tsunami could range between $122 billion to $235 billion.
